There is a very interesting story attached behind the “Chaurasi Kos Yatra” pilgrimage. According to the scriptures, one day Lord Shiva was sitting at Mount Kailash and looking very tense. At this Godess Parvati asked him the reason of his worry. Lord Shiva said that he had heard that everyone must have a spiritual Guru or teacher or he does not get the benefit of his good deeds! But he did not have any spiritual teacher! Goddess Parvati suggested him to make ‘Lord Vishnu’ his spiritual Guru. Lord Shiva liked the idea and went and requested Lord Vishnu to become his spiritual Guru. Lord Vishnu accepted his request and they decided to meet at the bank of river Birija.
To welcome Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Shiva created a new city on the banks of river Birija. There, he created numerous trees with fruits, cows and birds. He also constructed a throne made of gold by the name of “Shree Golok Dham”. Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi were immensely happy to see the place. After all the rituals got completed, Lord Shiva gave the name of ‘Krishna’ to Lord Vishnu and ‘Radha’ to Goddess Lakshmi and very humbly requested them to stay there. Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi happily agreed as they were glad to be the new ‘Radha’ and ‘Krishna’.
‘Radha’ and ‘Krishna’ began loving their stay at ‘Golok Dham’. One day Radhaji’s brother came there but Radha and Krishna were so involved with each other that they did not see him. At this he got angry and cursed them that they would too not see each other though they would love each other.
Krishnaji (Lord Vishnu) said they had to go to the earth to live the curse. But Radhaji (Goddess Lakshmi) hesitated as the earth was not a good place. So Krishnaji (Lord Vishnu) suggested taking ‘Golok Dham’ to the earth instead! Krishnaji requested Yamunaji to come on earth and the Birija river water was mixed in it! Then Lord Krishna spread sand by the size of his 84 fingers across river Yamuna in the area of 84 (252 kilometers). Thus the area came to be known as “Braj”! All the cows and birds were requested to come and live there.
Radhaji (Goddess Lakshmi) took birth at Barsana and few years Shri Krishna (Lord Vishnu) was born to Nand Baba and Devaki Maa in a cell. They both had to bear the pangs of separation to complete the curse! Such is sanctity of this place! And everyone who completes this journey (Chaurasi kos) gets rid of his sins as well as receives unlimited blessings!
